Nicholas Negroponte is taking a leave of absence from his position as director of the MIT Media Laboratory to chair the non-profit One Laptop Per Child. The organization seeks to re-think the portable computer, and to put thousands of machines in the hands of children in impoverished countries around the world. Speaking at Forrester’s Consumer Forum in Chicago, Negroponte outlined OLPC’s progress, the obstacles they’ve faced, and the promise of connecting children all over the world.
