Concept: The Lincoln MKR
For those of us who attend auto shows with any regularity, there’s a familiarity to the love/hate relationship we have with concept vehicles. They steal our hearts, promise us a brighter future, show us that anything is possible. Of course, at the same time, they tell us to wait, tell us that the future is still a long way off. And, many more times than not, that future never quite arrives. Well, with that in mind, here comes the Lincoln MKR. Here’s the concept: It takes some of its design cues (like the double wing grille) from the 1941 Lincoln Continetal Cabriolet. One of the important ways they updated the original classic — the MKR is environmentally friendlier, made using some more renewable resources, like a reengineered oak instrument panel, mohair carpet and soy seat foam. Of course, the better that sounds to you, the sadder it is. Because it is just a concept, and Lincoln isn’t making any promises for production just yet. I did get to speak with designer Gordon Platto at the North American International Auto Show, and he assured me that features of the concept vehicle will be appearing in Lincoln production cars very soon.
