Intel Chip Chat – Network Insights audio podcast with Allyson Klein: OpenNESS is a multi-access edge computing software toolkit, which delivers two functions: making edge platforms more cloud-like across any type of underlying network infrastructure, as well as enabling application developers to leverage the underlying network to get the necessary KPIs, extend applications on the network edge.

Prakash Kartha, Director for Edge Computing, Edge Computing and Ecosystem Enabling, Intel Corporation joins Intel Chip Chat Network Insights to feature how Intel is fueling industry innovation with OpenNESS and leveraging industry investments in network platforms.

As a cloud-native microservices based architecture, OpenNESS provides the following use cases:

  • Dataplane microservices that offer the best performance and throughput for your edge applications.
  • Accelerator microservices that enable edge apps to leverage accelerators such as FPGAs, AI and media cards to get maximum utilization and scale on the platform.
  • Enhanced Platform Awareness microservices that expose unique hw level hooks to apps function in a distributed edge deployment.
  • Software packages are based on the 3GPP 5G specs to enable edge computing on a 5G network.

All these features are available for download from the openness website:
openness.org

Prakash highlights recent developments such as the acquisition of Smart Edge to offer enterprise customers a commercial option and deploy max solutions on enterprise premises, with a fully featured ready to deploy solution.

Since Intel announced OpenNESS last year at Mobile World Congress in 2019 the there have been three major software releases of OpenNESS and now there is adoption by commercial partners for deployment in real world edge use cases. We have deployments both in on-premise enterprise use cases as well as on the network edge. Tune into hear about partnerships with China Unicom, Tencent, China Mobile, QNAP and what to expect in the coming year.
