Microsoft Needs “Marketing DNA” to Rival iPod, Analyst Says

MENLO PARK, July 6, 2006 (PodTech News) — Microsoft is planning to release a digital music and video player to rival the iPod this holiday season, Bloomberg News reported yesterday. Microsoft has partnered with third-party hardware manufacturers to create digital music players that work with its Windows Media Player, but has so far not ventured into building the hardware itself. PodTech News talked with Van Baker, a Research Vice President with industry analysis firm Gartner Inc, about Microsoft’s prospects for competing with Apple in the digital music arena at this stage of the game.
