In this Intel Chip Chat audio podcast with Allyson Klein: On this episode of Conversations in the Cloud, we are joined by Katrina Feliciano-Stoddard, Product Line Leader, Visualization Solutions at Intel. Katrina talks about simulation and visualization, its role in innovation, and how the technology is being used across industries such as manufacturing, oil & gas, aerospace and defense, media and entertainment, and health and life sciences. Scientists search for new discoveries, engineers are looking at new ways to do things, to design and develop new products – but everyone is looking to do achieve innovations in less time and at reduced costs. They are looking for increased efficiencies and better ways to get more intelligence.

Katrina explains that companies with engineers and scientists often need to bring in a new role to help manage the software and systems that actually perform the computational and visualization tools. They require expertise in optimizing the performance of the hardware and software so that the engineers and scientists can focus on innovation. This is where Intel, with its experience in software, really shines – and where Intel Select Solutions for Simulation and Visualization comes in. Intel Select Solutions for Simulation & Visualization offers a turnkey solution to deploy and maintain a cluster, where Intel has already optimized the software and done the performance testing. Intel works closely with engineers to optimize performance for this end-to-end Intel Select Solution.

One of the biggest trends in the space is analytics and software-defined visualization – companies are gathering more data from new sources about their product or solution and being able to visualize more complex and larger datasets is key to communicating to business stakeholders who might not understand the science behind the new innovations. Viewing photorealistic images at the same time the computation takes place speeds up the discovery and analysis process, thus reducing the time-to-market for manufacturing and research organizations. Katrina notes that this trend is across all sizes of companies, from enterprises focusing on exascale to small and mid-size companies.

Katrina and Jake also talk about their advice to young people just coming into the industry. Namely, how It’s important to have a grounding in the technology but also critical to look at the bigger picture of business drivers and consider how will the technology will benefit the industry and the larger world.
