IT Best Practices: Over time, Intel IT has evolved our strategies to optimize our data center infrastructure to respond faster to business needs while enhancing the services and business value of IT. Our new data center strategies shift the emphasis away from reducing the number of physical data center facilities to, instead, focusing on approaches that leverage the full potential of our data centers worldwide. This helps increase IT business value across the entire data center infrastructure. We expect our methods to achieve a nominal cost savings of about USD 1 billion by 2014. (Net present value of USD 550 to 650 million)

In 2009 the Irish rock band U2 experienced the realities of space communication when they connected in a live 2-way video conference between Bono on the concert stage in front of stadium audiences and astronauts in the International Space Station. There’s only about a half second delay from the surface of our planet to the ISS so delays are generally minor. But such a hook-up would be impossible, as a real-time back-and-forth connection, from Mars. If you were going to set up a data network in space, distance would be one challenge – the revolutions of planets and the orbits of space craft pose further difficulties. But there is a solution in development. Internet pioneers such as Vint Cerf and Kevin Fall have been working with NASA on a Delay Tolerant Network protocol to do in space what TCP/IP has done on earth.

IT Cloud Computing: An Intel cross-organizational group developed a common cloud computing taxonomy designed to meet Intel’s comprehensive requirements by classifying the entire breadth of existing cloud technologies. Based on this classification, diagramed in Figure 1 in this IT whitepaper, we created an ecosystem analysis that helps identify suppliers that meet Intel’s needs.

To develop a single taxonomy for use across Intel, we based our work on several externally developed taxonomies as well as Intel IT capability frameworks that describe our primary applications and infrastructure services.

The taxonomy provides a common terminology and baseline information that can be applied to help develop cloud strategies both for Intel’s IT environment and for Intel’s products and services.

Intel IT is using the taxonomy and analysis to facilitate internal discussions and identify innovative IT cloud computing solutions that deliver efficiencies.”

We talk with Intel senior researchers Rahul Sakthankar and Lily Mummert from the Intel research lab in Pittsburgh about practical applications like tracking honeybees in a hive, watching for signs of swarming. And we talk with Mary Purcell Miramontes, a national leader with the USDA, about the growing problem of Colony Collapse Disorder.

While his colleagues are tracking bees, Branislav Kveton, machine learning researcher at Intel Labs in Santa Clara, California, tells us of his developments of algorithms for facial recognition.

IT Cloud Computing: Intel IT has defined a path for building and implementing a private cloud for the enterprise. This is a significant shift to a new enterprise architecture based on a cloud computing approach. Cloud computing is a shared, multi-tenant environment built on a highly efficient, automated, virtualized infrastructure. In this video, you’ll see how Intel IT’s office and enterprise private cloud not only increases efficiency and agility, but also offers high availability without additional cost, and improved capacity management. This roadmap is based on extensive experience – Intel IT operates a massive worldwide computing environment, supporting about 78,000 Intel employees and 100,000 servers.

The concept of “stemness” refers to the capacity within a stem cell to create different kinds of cells. It promises to revolutionize medicine. Isolated in the petri dish, stem cells exhibit interesting behaviors that scientists are just beginning to understand. With thousands of cells to monitor, computer vision technology is helping researchers analyze great numbers of cells move, divide, and die. The system also helps to understand how to control cells, with the goal of making them differentiate. In this online radio edition of Future Lab, we talk with scientists Mei Chen, Phil Campbell, and Takeo Kanade who are studying stem cells with the aid of computer vision technology.

IT Information Security: Intel IT recently completed a technology evaluation of Intel Anti-Theft Technology (Intel AT), available on laptop PCs with 2010 Intel Core vPro processors.

Intel AT is a hardware-based technology that can help detect theft and disable a laptop if it is lost or stolen, as shown in Figure 1 in the PDF. This protects valuable enterprise data and intellectual property as well as the hardware itself. Additionally, Intel AT adds value to full-disk encryption by protecting data even if the encryption keys are compromised. We worked with our encryption supplier during the development of Intel AT to help define the features required for enterprise use.

In our evaluation, we worked with the Intel AT product group and our encryption supplier to test features over our wireless LAN (WLAN), LAN, and virtual private network (VPN), based on a possible enterprise use case in which a Service Desk technician disables a stolen laptop.

The results of our evaluation indicate that Intel AT will improve our ability to protect company-owned laptops as well as data and intellectual property. We plan to test the same features over a mobile 3G network in the near future.

Zero energy buildings, known as ZEB and also known as zero net energy buildings, promise to have a huge impact on energy consumption globally, especially since office and commercial buildings use nearly 40% of fossil based energy in the U.S. and Europe. Milan Milenkovic, who heads up the zero net energy project for Intel Labs, is a visionary. His vision is positive net energy buildings. In his imagination he sees your computer going to sleep when you walk away from your desk. It senses you and knows the difference between you and other people. It illustrates how energy systems will soon operate beyond today’s concept of supply and demand. For example, your electric car’s energy needs will exist in conjunction with the other electric cars in your neighborhood, asserts Intel Labs’ researcher Annabelle Pratt, who has been studying intelligent cars and the energy grid. “If real‑time [energy] pricing becomes dynamic,” she says, “and we get rate structures set in place where we could have localized pricing to address localized conditions, you could locally change the electricity cost profile to promote charging at a different time, changing the profile on the vehicles.”

IT Best Practices: Intel IT has found that mobile business PCs have been crucial to enabling business continuity during a variety of disaster situations. We have standardized on a mobile business PC solution for Intel’s highly mobile workforce because they enable employees to work productively, with full computing capabilities, from any location. To further support remote collaboration, we also use tools such as as Voice over IP (VoIP)-based videoconferencing and unified messaging.
We have found that these technologies also enable employees to continue working effectively during disasters that impact individual locations or entire regions. Overall, we estimate that about 7,500 of Intel’s 80,000 employees have experienced disruptive events in which their mobile business PCs played an essential role in enabling them to continue working productively. Intel has also provided laptops for humanitarian relief efforts following natural disasters that destroyed infrastructure, such as the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Mobile PCs and wireless communications provided immediately available technology infrastructure that assisted relief workers and victims.

To learn more about this IT Best Practices case study, check out the details in our Intel IT whitepaper PDF.

In Intel, about 80% of our PCs are laptops. How much mobile PCs do you have in your organization?

IT Business Agility: Selim Aissi and Jim Baca know enterprise mobility, not just because they research it for Intel IT — they live it, working closely with each other with a half a continent of space between them. Baca, a Principal Engineer, says the most surprising thing he’s learned about enterprise mobility is how much the complexity of small devices is taken for granted. “It’s surprising just how complex those architectures are, because now you’re combining many items, like a telephony stack. You have everything jammed into one little device.” That functionality is helping, behind the scenes, to drive IT business agility. Aissi, formerly an aerospace engineer with expertise in embedded software, says, “Today I have to unlock a phone. Dial something. Go to a browser.

What is possible if we could greatly reduce the bottlenecks in the transfer of data? Electrons and copper wire have taken us far, but only so far. What lies beyond is light speed. Silicon photonics is the transmission of data using light, which can go much faster and farther. It unleashes many new possibilities inside and outside computer platforms. Photonics is very expensive but that appears to be changing. Dr. Mario Paniccia, Director of Intel’s Silicon Photonics Lab, says that with silicon photonics, “optical communications now connecting your laptop and your computer, your handheld, your TV – in the future all will be optically connected. All this data in the cloud, you can just simply plug a fiber into your PC, a fiber into your handheld, and you can move content and data around at enormously fast data rates.”

Green IT: To increase data center energy efficiency at one of our older data centers in India, Intel IT’s Data Center Services group collaborated on a technology study with the IT compute organization and Intel Facilities Management to develop a comprehensive IT Best Practices approach to metering power usage. We developed methods for identifying measurable efficiency improvements and placed instrumentation to continuously track power usage effectiveness (PUE), the key metric of data center energy efficiency. Using PUE metrics allowed us to make decisions that increased IT Business efficiency, helped achieve optimum data center facility utilization, and provided data we can share with other Intel facilities around the world to proliferate energy savings and IT sustainability.

IT Information Security: “We cannot solve security problems with technology.” That is one of the observations of Intel IT’s Alan Ross, a Senior Principal Engineer who has developed deep insights into the data security landscape over the past decade. IT Security starts with people and in this video presentation Ross says the future of security strategies depends on equipping users. “They are the stewards of information security for the corporation, and it’s up to them and the way that they interact and behave with the data that’s going to effectively protect information.”
